Multipitch climbing in the Vercors

Internationally renowned, Presles is above all an impressive cliff. Rising between 100 and 300 metres over a 5-kilometre stretch, it is steep throughout and rich in colour, alternating between grey and ochre. A true climber’s paradise. Fortunately, it isn’t reserved for elite climbers only: many moderate routes allow climbers of various levels to enjoy this unique atmosphere.

Here is a selection of some of the more accessible options:

Bim Bam Boum (AD, 100 mètres) Easy to access, this route is a must before tackling longer itineraries. Manageable within a half-day, it’s ideal for getting familiar with multi-pitch rope manoeuvres and abseiling. Required level: 4c

Les Buis (D, 250 mètres) A highly historical route: it was in fact the very first line opened on the cliff, back in 1953. It features many old-school crack pitches, which really put into perspective the commitment of the pioneers, climbing without the equipment we use today. Required level: 5a

La voix d'Eliane (D+, 150 mètres) A moderately difficult and very homogeneous route, making for a beautiful and modern climb throughout. Required level: 5c

Les Chrysanthèmes (TD-, 200 mètres) Another great classic. Very varied and extremely vertical: atmosphere guaranteed! Required level: 5c/6a

Le Nid d'Aigle (TD-, 250 mètres) Increasing in both steepness and difficulty, this route finishes with highly aesthetic and dizzying overhanging sections. Required level: 5c/6a

Léadine (D+/TD-, 120 mètres) Very homogeneous in difficulty, the only way to access this beautiful route is by abseiling from above: a sure way to instantly get into the atmosphere of the place. Required level: 5c

Digitibus (D+/TD-, 150 mètres) Once again, a superb slab climb containing all the ingredients that make Presles so special: excellent rock quality (grey limestone marked by water streaks), verticality, and a fantastic atmosphere. To top it all off, a succession of free-hanging abseils on the descent is sure to stay in your memory for a long time. Required level: 5c

Rates are €180 for a half-day and €280 for a full day.
